Ultraviolet, makeup and 5 more things that cause dark circles

Fatigue is not the only reason.

Usually, we blame the lack of healthy and full sleep in our dark circles.

However, fatigue is not the only reason why the skin under the eyes becomes reddish or bluish.

There are at least 7 other factors.

1. Genes

Yes, your parents may be the culprits.

“Families have hereditary traits that cause bruising under the eyes,” explains dermatologist Bruce Katz, MD, director of the Cosmetic and

Laser Surgery Clinic at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.

The situation is very common among people of southern, especially the Mediterranean type. ”

The good news is: if it is pigmentation, then there are special lasers in the dermatologist’s arsenal that will help you get rid of it.

2. Eczema

Eczema alone does not cause dark circles but causes constant itching.

“If you often rub itchy skin, it can lead to increased swelling, inflammation and damage to blood vessels in the area around the eyes, which makes the skin darker,” says dermatologist David E. Bank, MD, Director of Mount Kisco, NY, Center for Dermatology, Cosmetology, and Laser Surgery.

3. Allergy

Skin diseases such as eczema are not the only medical problem that affects the condition of the skin around the eyes.

“Allergies often provoke an increase of free histamine in the body, which turn to the expansion of capillaries,” Dr. Bank explains. The skin on the eyelids and under the eyes is very thin, the dilated blood vessels under it look darker than on the rest of the face.”

There is only one solution: prevent and immediately stop allergy attacks.

4. Makeup

It seems illogical – makeup should hide dark circles, right? But if you use a product – mascara, eye shadow, or even a concealer that irritates your skin – it can cause bruises under the eyes.

“Some people have an allergic reaction to makeup, and because they rub and scratch irritated skin, circles appear under the eyes,” warns Dr. Katz.

5. Face shape

Circles may have nothing to do with the actual state of your skin – it may be in the structure of the skull.

“Some people naturally have deep nasolacrimal grooves that deepen with age and darken the area under the eyes, pigmentation or blood vessels have nothing to do with it,” says Dr. Katz.

This problem is solved in cosmetology clinics using filler injections.

6. Vessels

“Dark under the eyes can arise simply because blood vessels shine through thin skin.

They have a bluish tint, and it seems that dark circles appear on the eyelids and under the eyes, but in reality these are capillaries, ”Dr. Katz explains.

7. UV

You think that walks in the fresh air improve your health.  “The skin around the eyes is the thinnest and most delicate, so the effect of ultraviolet radiation quickly manifests itself in this area in the form of expansion and increased blood flow,” says Dr. Bank. As a result, you can get dark circles. “
